Telecommunication operators have initiated the process of phasing out 2G networks to free up bandwidth for 4G and 5G technologies, not only in Europe but worldwide. The shutdown of 2G networks will impact various industries, including the transportation sector. Transportation companies relying on telematics systems based on 2G technology in their daily operations will need to upgrade to next-generation devices supporting LTE standards. Failure to take appropriate measures in a timely manner may lead to difficulties in fleet monitoring, route tracking, and logistics management for the company.

When will the 2G network be shutdown?

A large number of mobile network operators have already shut down many 2G networks or are planning to do so soon. According to available information, a significant portion of European operators plan to phase out 2G networks by the end of 2025. Based on the available data, by that time, the 2G network will be completely shut down in countries such as:

  • Albania

  • Cyprus

  • Denmark

  • Iceland

  • Lithuania

  • Portugal

  • Romania

  • Sweden

  • Hungary

thus making it impossible to effectively conduct online monitoring using terminals equipped with a 2G modem.

Whereas in countries such as:

  • Belgium

  • Czech Republic

  • Greece

  • Spain

  • Norway

  • Netherlands

  • Italy

at least some of the national operators will shut down the 2G network, thereby making it more difficult to use terminals equipped with a 2G modem.
